Hike – Edgewood County Park and Natural Preserve

Meet at one of two places:

  1. Carpool from our regular location at 1501 Page Mill Rd, Palo Alto at 9:40 am.  This is the current headquarters of HP Inc.  To get there: Take I-280 to Page Mill Road (PMR).  Proceed 2.1 miles east on PMR across Junipero Serra Boulevard/Foothill Expressway to Peter Coutts.  At the intersection, turn right into the entrance and through the gate.  Turn right into the second entrance to parking and park.  This is HP parking; do not park in the Tesla parking area.  Please note:  There are no restroom facilities so please plan accordingly.

  1. At Edgewood County Park, Edgewood Road Entrance. Redwood City 94062, at 10 am.

The hike begins at Edgewood County Park and Natural Preserve at 10 am.

Driving directions:  Exit Edgewood Road from Hwy 280.   Go east (toward the bay).  Go 1 mile on Edgewood Road to the Edgewood Park and Day Camp sign on your right and turn right onto Old Stage Road.  Park in the parking lot just off Edgewood Road. (There is an inner parking lot, but it will probably be full.)

With all the rain we have had, this should be a wonderful year for spring wildflowers.  Edgewood County Park and Natural Preserve is a great place to see them.  The focus will be on native wildflowers.  These wildflowers are better adapted to soils with serpentine minerals.  Edgewood is known for having serpentine soils.

Although our hike will be relatively short (about 3.7 miles) and has only about 550 feet of elevation gain, it has something for everyone.  It has lovely shady trails along steep canyons, sunny grassy hillsides with a wide variety of wildflowers (not to mention butterflies), hilltops covered with live oaks and buckeyes, and great views of the San Francisco Bay.  I recommend wearing long pants (and/or walking in the middle of the trails), as there is sometimes poison oak along the side of the trails.
