Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park Fall Creek Unit, from Empire Grade to the Lime Kilns

August’s hike was originally scheduled to be at Butano State Park. Unfortunately, the trails that are open are very steep and fully overgrown with berry vines; not suitable for an HPREC hike.  Our August hike will now be at Fall Creek.

As part of our new COVID-19 protocols, walkers must sign up on our NEW myHPREC website in advance and supply their emergency contact information electronically.  This is necessary to avoid close contact on the day of the walk and to make sure the maximum of number of walkers for each session is 30 (including the walk leader).

Meet at one of two places:

  1. At  (car pool location) the Northside Parking Lot located on Highway 9 midway between University Avenue and Santa Cruz Avenue in Los Gatos at 9:20 am. The sign at the lot says “Free Unlimited Parking – Northside Lot.”   Take Highway 17 south toward Los Gatos.  Exit at Highway 9-Los Gatos/Saratoga and continue west on Highway 9 (approx. 0.3 mile) to the parking lot, located on your right just before Santa Cruz Avenue.

Or…

  1. At Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park Fall Creek Unit at 10 am. If you drive directly, take CA-17 south from San Jose toward Santa Cruz.  Exit CA-17 (exit 3) at Mt. Herman Road to Scotts Valley.  Turn right onto Mt. Herman Road.  After 3.5 miles, turn right onto Graham Hill Road. Cross CA-9 onto Felton-Empire Grade.  The Fall Creek unit entrance is 0.6 mile on the right (watch for sign).

Parking is free, but there are no facilities at the Fall Creek unit.  Take water and lunch.  Fall Creek Unit Trailhead, Felton Empire Road, Felton, CA 95018

The hike begins at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park Fall Creek Unit at 10 am.

Fall Creek (a unit of Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park) is in Felton. This hike is well-suited to hot summer weather. The trails are completely shaded, and the creek runs year-round.  Fall Creek features the former site of lime kilns and a barrel mill, and is second-growth mixed evergreen forest.  Most of the hike follows Fall Creek with gradual elevation gain.  As always, watch out for poison oak.
