Walk – Bair Island, Redwood City

Meet at the Bair Island Parking Lot.

There appears to be no GPS street address for the parking lot, but Google Maps recognizes “Bair Island Parking Lot” as a legitimate destination.  The official address is Uccelli Drive, Redwood City, CA 94063.

Directions:  From Hwy 101, take the Whipple Avenue exit heading east. Follow the road as it curves sharply to the right and becomes East Bayshore Road, running parallel to 101. Continue straight past a bunch of auto dealers, then follow a small roundabout as the road turns left and becomes Bair Island Road. Just before The Villas apartment complex, turn right at a somewhat obscure sign for the wildlife refuge, and park in the lot for Bair Island. We will meet at the parking lot, but if you are late, the trailhead is on the other side of Bair Island Road and to the right of the parking lot entrance.

Place: Bair Island is a wildlife refuge and ecological reserve opened in 2015. It’s a complex mosaic of twisted tidal channels, mudflats and salt marsh vegetation. It’s also a hot spot for birds and marine wildlife, so bring your binoculars. (Sorry, no dogs.) The walking trails are flat and well-tended.
