Bair Island in Redwood City

As part of our new COVID-19 protocols, walkers must sign up on our NEW myHPREC website in advance and supply their emergency contact information electronically.  This is necessary to avoid close contact on the day of the walk and to make sure the maximum of number of walkers for each session is 15 (including the walk leader).

Meet at: Bair Island is a marsh area in Redwood City.

Hike Location:  Stevens Creek Trail from Blackberry Farm to Stevens Creek Boulevard to McClellan Ranch Preserve to Blackberry Farm.

Driving Directions:

From Highway 101, take the Whipple Avenue exit heading east. Follow the road as it curves sharply to the right and becomes East Bayshore Road, running parallel to 101. Continue straight past a bunch of auto dealers, then follow a small roundabout as the road turns left and becomes Bair Island Road. Just before The Villas apartment complex, turn right at a somewhat obscure sign for the wildlife refuge, and park in the lot for Bair Island. We will meet at the parking lot, but, if you are late, the trailhead is on the other side of Bair Island Road and to the right of the parking lot entrance.

(There appears to be no GPS street address for the parking lot, but Google Maps recognizes “Bair Island Parking Lot” as a legitimate destination.)

Bair Island is a wildlife refuge and ecological reserve opened in 2015. It’s a complex mosaic of twisted tidal channels, mudflats and salt marsh vegetation. It’s also a hotspot for birds and marine wildlife, so bring your binoculars. (Sorry, no dogs.) The walking trails are flat and well-tended.
