Bear Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve

As part of our new COVID-19 protocols, hikers must sign up on our NEW myHPREC website in advance and supply their emergency contact information electronically.  This is necessary to avoid close contact on the day of the hike and to make sure the maximum of number of hikers for each session is 30 (including the hike leader).

Meet at the HPQ carpool location* or if you drive there directly, from Los Gatos take Hwy 17 to Bear Creek Road, opposite Lexington Reservoir (3 miles).  Going south (toward the ocean): go under the overpass, the road curves right onto Bear Creek Road.  Turn left at the stop sign.

Going north on Hwy 17 towards Los Gatos take the overpass.

From the stop sign, drive 1 mile.  The parking lot is on the left.  Plan to meet the carpool group at about 10:00 am.

Bear Creek a OSP operated by the Peninsula Open Space District features some old growth redwoods as well as an interpretive one-mile trail around a pond.  The property has a long history of logging and efforts by some to develop homes and even a golf course.  Remnants of Alma College remain and will be reconstructed as part of a 20-year plan by the District.  Our route begins with a somewhat steep climb and then rises more gradually before descending to a lunch spot after which we will view some old growth redwoods along the trail before heading down to where we began the hike.

Long pants are recommended as a guard against poison oak vines along the sides of some of the trails.
